The answer to the bannerman problem is simple--the Japanese in later
periods used the sashimono. This was a lightweight rig of bamboo lashed
on or set in sockets fixed to the back of a man's armor. It would have an
upright with a crosspiece lashed to the upper end, supporting a variety
of marking devices: rectangular flags, arrays of feathers or large
leaves, oversized fans, etc. Use thin paper or other lightweight
materials for the banners and they can be pretty darn big. And the man's
arms are still free to fight.

A long bow and a strong bow,
And let the sky grow dark.
The nock to the cord, the shaft to the ear,
And a foreign king for a mark!
