The answer to the bannerman problem is simple--the Japanese in later 
periods used the sashimono.  This was a lightweight rig of bamboo lashed 
on or set in sockets fixed to the back of a man's armor. It would have an 
upright with a crosspiece lashed to the upper end, supporting a variety 
of marking devices:  rectangular flags, arrays of feathers or large 
leaves, oversized fans, etc.  Use thin paper or other lightweight 
materials for the banners and they can be pretty darn big.  And the man's 
arms are still free to fight.
