We're a very attachment conscious and class conscious group
and wear our symbols of attachment/rank proudly. If someone we don't know comes into proximity wearing a symbol of attachment/rank we are very quick to ask them their "status" so that we know where they "fit"...
I've seen it happen many times...many many times. And it confuses the newish person and sometimes is offputting...but often they adjust and learn from it (and never wear that spiffy white belt they bought on line again;)

Do people *REALLY* walk up to complete strangers and say "Hey, who's
your pel?" and then do nothing else? I'm just not seeing it, and I'm
not exactly the most socialy adept creature to walk the face of the
planet.
