[Ansteorra] Newbie Status

I agree -- though I think comparing it to the yellow star is a bit much. My
newness is not far behind me -- I joined in... gosh, 2006? 2007? Was it
really that long ago?

I would have politely ditched the new-person sash, honestly. While I do
think how an organization treats its new blood is an important view into its
true character, it's really not that hard to recognize a new person at an
event. If, at my first event, I'd met the sort of person who rests on their
awards and considers the new or untitled or unfamiliar unworthy of
conversation, my first event likely would have been my last. Instead, I was
welcomed like a long-lost sister. I'm so comfortable in the SCA now that
I've even been ill-tempered toward people. ;-)

Why don't we just treat everyone like they're new and treat the new like
they've been here for years? Share your food and drink and your hospitality.
Inquire as to their health and well-being. Help to carry their gear and
direct people who look lost. Chat with people you don't know -- they might
be fresh new members, or they might be visiting triple-peers who left their
finery at home. Treat others as you would be treated and newcomers will see
everything you wish them to see.
