I know that.
The peer in question does too, now. And not from me, the two of us have never spoken on the matter.

And I didn't mention any names, or even the gender or particular peerage of the peer, for multiple reasons.


First, I believe in human redemption, and I understand the peer has expressed regret for the incident, which in the absence of opportunity to apologize to the lady wronged is as far as that can go, really.

Second, such details are unimportant to the points made, that 1) yes, if you have the opportunity, please advise any newcomers against wearing things that may offend, but 2) no matter how long YOU'VE been playing, it may surprise you what can be twisted into something that can offend, and 3) even those specifically charged with education and guidance may fall short of ideal behavior at times.

Of course, the trouble with that sort of situation begins with the fact
hat a red belt (or red scarf, green or yellow belt) is not "reserved"
or squires...it is merely a tradition.

Case in point.
here was a woman here in Northkeep, more a fringie than a newbie, at an
vent hosted by our then-shire that wore a cloth belt she had made
erself, black with a red stripe running the length of the belt down the
enter. She thought it went well with the red-and-black plaid garb she
ade for the event, and was justly proud of her work. A peer of the
ealm came to her and berated her for the belt, claiming that against
he plaid the black outer stripes could not be seen and it LOOKED LIKE
he was wearing the red belt reserved for a squire. Somehow the red
alf-inch stripe was more visible from a distance than the two outer
lack half-inch stripes. Go figure. In anger and shame she left the
vent, the site, the shire and the Society. In response several
tronger-spirited members BEGAN wearing black belts with red stripes.
