The Associated Press reported today that "despite a letter mailed to 6,000
camps" demanding the royalties on tunes sung around campfires, it actually had
no intention of charging scout camps and other nonprofit camps. They explained
that the database they used did not explain their status or affiliation.

ASCAP was aiming at "private, profitable camps that put on large productions,"
sometimes with professional performers. They said that some camps "are really
like sending your kids to a resort," and those should pay royalties.

My guess is that the SCA campfires are safe too, except for errant marshmallows
and similar editorializations.
