     You have it backwards, Merimac was the ship's original name.

The Merimac was built from the remains of a wooden ship's hull that had been 
burned to the waterline. I believe that ship was the Virgina which after 
being
rebuilt as an armored ship was re-christened the Merimac (Though I think 
we have the spelling wrong).
