That fine man was (and still is, barring major misfortune) Sir Konrad
Altenstieg von Griefswald.  We used to hang out and do foolish things
together in the Outlands.  It was a great pleasure to see him, almost
exactly a decade since having last enjoyed his company.  I am not sure
what he said to you but , having had a good view from the field, I am
sure the compliments were well merited.
