ANST - curious about archers in war scenarios

here is a thought. Your point about shields blocking arrows is well
taken. A good force of archers would probably be aligned in the back
center. What if the archers always attacked from the flank of the
approaching position. Would not the approachiong force have to change
its attack or at the very least commit some of its force or reserves to
meet with the new threat. Do you think that a force of archers acting
and shooting together could not have such effect on the field of battle.
