: 	In 1998, the greater El Paso/Juarez region will host a
: Quadricentennial celebration commemorating the 400th anniversary of
the
: "First Thanksgiving" that took place on the banks of the Rio Grande
in
: April 1598.  In 1995, Governor George Bush appointed a
Quadricentennial
: Commission to oversee the 1998 celebration.
: 
: 	The Quadricentennial Commission has developed two projects,the
: Quadricentennial Festival and the Quadricentennial Gala.  The
: Quadricentennial Festival, to be held April 24 through 26, 1998, is a
: Renaissance Style Festival with a Spanish theme that will be created
at
: Cougar Park in historic Socorro, TX.  Socorro is in the heart of the
: Mission Valley, an area that has been designated by the City of El
Paso as
: a potential tourist attraction.  Courgar Park will be transformed
into a
: Spanish village that may have been established four hundred years ago
in
: the area we now know as El Paso County.  History specific actors will
take
: visitors back in time by re-creating the atmosphere and flavor of a
time
: long past.  Facades of Mission Socorro, Mission Ysleta, Presidio
Chapel
: San Elceario will be seen as well as a town square and jousting
arena.
: 
: Those who enjoy fantasy and legend will be entertained by court
jesters,
: jugglers, swordsmen, falconers, maidens, lords, and royalty.  Artisan
: booths will be spread throughout to showcase the talent and resources
of
: the area.  A children's area complete with a children's stage will be
: created to educate and delight children of all ages.  Additionally,
two
: more stages will feature renaissance-style entertainment.
: 
: 	The Quadricentannial International Gala, scheduled for April 25,
: 1998, has been designated the official celebration event of the
: Quadricentennial year.  The Gala will feataure a concert by the El
Paso
: symphony Orchestra and the Chihuahua Philharmonic Orchestra, and a
formal
: dinner and dance.
: 
: 	A major advertising and marketing campaign will be launched
: locally and regionally to promote the Quadricentennial year. 
Brochures
: will be sent throughout Mexico, Europe and the United States to draw
: tourists to the El Paso area on the weekend of April 24-26, 1998.

: 	Mayor Carlos Ramirez of El Paso, Mayor Ramon Galindo Noriega of
: Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and the mayors of surrounding cities
are
: excited and supportive of these two events.  The event is a unique

boost
: tourism in 1998 and beyond.  The Mayors have endorsed the
