ANST - curious about archers in war scenarios

I was counting on a determined attack on the archers. I am not saying
that archers are to beleft to the mercy of the attack. Archers can
attack from any side and at a distance. A well organized withdraw before
the determined attack would allow the archers to move into any flanking
position allowed and allow for even a more concetrated area for more
arrow firing for greater effect. Also the determined attack on archers
uses up more of the opposing forces. A fast moving shield wall or spear
front would be very effective. And any force attacking the defensive
line could be flanked from several sides with arrow fire.
