ANST - A&S "skill ranks"...

Good Morning,

I will not argue art vs craft. I will make a few points though.

The fact is that all the crafts and arts within the society are
  categorized as art.

How does one prove (to themself or others) that they are a master of
  what they do?

Michael Peters said something that sounded like:
> We don't create new things. We reproduce crafts and designs ALREADY in
> existance.

Gosh. So do most musicians, painters, etc. *shrug* In todays world,
there are very few things not already done by someone. It's how you do
  something that makes it art.

> Perhaps this is why to be a Laurel it is NOT just mastery of a craft.

Damn, and I thought it was the fact that any Peer of the Society must be
a good person, trustworthy, and worthy of respect. These people are then
recognized depending on what they do as their area of expertise.
  (Fighting, service or art/craft/science)

> This is important but please don't denigrate those who choose to
> actually (gasp) buy inks.

  Uhh. Did I?

Honestly I do think that someone who only buys extract kits is not a
master brewer. They must learn how to blend the grains together, as well
as understand such things as the affect yeast will have on the brew,
etc. I do not think they need to grow their own grains to accomplish
this. Of course that would be bonus points, but without the
understanding, it doesn't matter how many bonus points you get.

> We (and I do include myself) are craftspeople not artists.

I consider myself a craftsman just because of the art I chose to persue
currently. Brewing, in my mind, is not an art, but a craft. Dancing, on
the other hand, is an activity I persue.

> People say I have the wrong attitude. Maybe they are right. I have
> done Art and crafts (calligraphy, greenware, enameling, needlepoint
> ,macrame, leatherwork you name it I probably have some experience doing
> it) for better than 25 years.

Experience doing something does not make you a master, nor the craft an
art. Simple crafts or activies can become art if the desire, experience
and insite are there in the creator.

Damn. You need to work at that. If you think this simple tirade will
piss off those with higher rank, you haven't tried hard enough or lived
in an area of easily offended individuals. After all, the truly artistic
tirades piss off everyone, but cause them to agree with you because you
  are right. *smile*

Ciao,
