As far as finding traditional dance instructors, oddly enough, I wouldn't
go to the Eastern community in my area. We had thought of that. During
one of our more public performances, we attracted some Ethnic attention.
Invited them out to dance with us, and ended up teaching them. They had
grown up with it, sure, but had danced during play like kids here play
cowboys and Indians. No serious knowledge or experience involved. There
was nothing to be learned from these ladies as far as dance goes. We have
drained them of Cultural information, however, being interested in more
than just dance. After all, the dance is very affected by the culture.

We learned what we know about dance from videos that advertise themselves
as tratitional, ethnic, or tribal style dance. There are occationally
dance symposiums scattered all over the place. It may take some digging
to find them. Scorpions Hollow in the Outlands (Clovis, NM) is having one
this weekend-- advertises itself as European and Middle Eastern.
Shoshona hosts a Middle Eastern dance symposium in al-Barran in the
Outlands (Albuquerque, NM) in the spring. Very Very informative!!
