The First Alexandrian Symposium on Women in the Middle AGes and
Renaissance is looking for instructors!
The Women's Symposium will be held August 30, 1997 at Southwest Texas
State University in San Marcos, Texas.
The Symposium's purpose is to take a deeper look at women's activities
and opportunities in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Myths will be
exploded, knowledge uncovered, legends revealed.
The day features such classes as: Women and Magic in the Sagas; Women in
the Trades and Guilds; Women's Role in Medicine; Medieval Contraception;
The Trobaritz (female troubadours); The Beguines; The Life and Times of
Queen Isabella; Warriors and War-Leaders - Women in Battle; Music in the
Cloister (female composers); and many other excellent classes. We also
anticipate participation by university professors whose expertise is
History and Women's Studies. A revel and reception will follow the day's
classes, giving teachers and students a chance to relax and converse over
food and drink.
If you would like to teach, or have an idea for a class, please contact
Mari ferch Rathyen, (Karen Moon), 3270 Nacogdoches #1311, San
Antonio, TX, 78217, or call 210-657-1311, or reply to the above
e-mail address, putting "symposium" in the subject line.
Potential instructors are requested to provide a brief class description,
a list of major sources, and a short resume, listing any SCA or
mundane credentials that might apply. (Amateur scholar is just
fine!) Approximately half the slots for classes are still available.
Instructors will be provided a lounge area and refreshments.
The Symposium will be hosted by the Shire of Ffynon Gath in lovely San
Marcos, TX, located halfway between San Antonio and Austin. On the edge
of the Hill Country, San Marcos offers ample ways to while away the rest
of your long weekend (e.g. shopping, antiquing, tubing, rafting, hiking,
relaxing, etc.) Both San Antonio with its many attractions and Austin's
famous live music and night life are less than an hour's drive away.
For more information contact Karen Moon at 210-657-1311 or Grace Morris
at 512-392-4492.
(Please feel free to post this to any other list that might be interested.)
Thanks!
Mari
