40? Heck, I got hooked in college. I'm intersted in finding period
applications for this addiction. I know blackwork is one, but I haven't
found much period cross-stitch, just embroidery. Any suggestions?

Cross-stitch is period. At least the concept is. What you do not see
in period are the intricate pictures common these days with many 
different shades of colors. Period cross-stitch tended toward geometric
patterns and simple colored pictures.
