Peers and students...

I don't think whether or not a Pelican take Proteges is the reason about
the amount of Pelicans given. Pelicans just seem to be given out slower
than others. When you look at the concept of service as compared to
fighting and arts and sciences, it is a much more esoteric concept. You
can see what art or hear what research or skill a person has but how do you
measure service and by what ctireria do you measure that service.
Sometimes it is easy.....a person undertakes a huge project or a
crisis comes up that is handled well and swiftly. Many times it is an
accumulation of service, which is why some people have been in the SCA 5 or
more years before they get their Pelicans. As i have said before on the
Net, anyone may suggest a candidate to a Pelican for consideration in the
Circle. The same holds true for the other peerages. If ever you feel that
someone has been overlooked, suggest that person to a Pelican.... but
please list the reasons why and what the individual has done.
You might actually think more of the opposite attitude... maybe too
many Laurels and Knighthoods are being given out.

I think that the peers who feel comfortable taking squires, apprentices and
proteges do so. Most of the Pelicans haven't for what ever reason, but I
know that all the Pelicans are willing to work with people without a formal
relationship. Actually most Pelicans seem to really enjoy working with
people.
