A&S STandards and The Lack Thereof in Ansteorra

Aquillane mentioned a feature of the arts and sciences competition which
Ansteorra has yet to embrace, that being the notion of "category standards"
by which the artisans and judges may appropriately evaluate an Arts and
Science Competition entry.

I have seen written standards in a number of the arts and sciences as use
din other kingdoms, and frankly, I don't know *why* Ansteorra has not yet
picked them up.  I moderated a roundtable discussion on A&S standards at a
King's College a year or so ago, and I beleive that most of the folks
attending were much in favor of standards, so long as these could be
implemented without introducing undue bureaucracy.

The arguments FOR written standards include:

(1) artist knows what level of achievement he must attain for recognition,
including how to tell if his widget meets that level of achievement by what
is described in the standard for "widget"

(2) those judging the entry are ALL using the same set of standards

(3) standards act as beginners guides for those learning an art

Personally, I want Ansteorra to develop standards in the very near future
covering documentation and also standards for research papers.  Having
standards in these areas would help people a lot, as I think most of the
artisans I've spoken to at A&S events are most anxious about documentation,
how to document, what todocument, what is enough documentation, what is too
much documentation, how can O get you Laurels to read my documentation, etc.  

Research papers are likewise a natural area for standards... every journal
accepting research papers for publications has standards, including:
appropriate topics, style issues such as line spacing, margins, footnote and
bibliography styles, etc.  

I'd like to see more discussion about this topic as well.
