Manchester and TRVTH

About Manchester's _A World Lit Only By Fire_: I refuse to accept the
false dichotomy of "easy read and good atmosphere" versus
"correctness". On the "hard to read" scale, Barbara Tuchman isn't
Greek, and she has a lot of truth per square inch. Nor did I find it
too difficult to wade thru general histories (the reign of King X for
various values of X, or books with titles like _The Thirteenth
Century_ or _The Medieval Village_, as examples). Any other
suggestions?

(To tangent: it's like the false dichotomy of "fun" versus
"authenticity". Why not have the best of both worlds and find ways to
be authentically fun?)
