I understood that the group badge will be added to the "ribbon". It will
show what group has won the ribbon. An heraldic honor roll, if you will.
Or a "chaplet of maintenance".

I did not understand that it added precedence. It is a group fighting
cookie, and as such a GOOD THING.

No. You just sometimes read things out of proportion. As I do. Some of
(our) reactions tend to emphasise the micron and forget the universe.
