During the period you're talking about, the Irish were considered the
best scholars in the world.  Having an Irish tutor, clerk, priest,
etc. was considered having the best.  Did they travel....all over the
known world.
Check out "History of Medieval Ireland"  Can't remember the author and
can't go running in to look it up, since I'm still in Ta mpa, but I'll
be back this weekend
