In my mind there is no question here.  Of course they CAN compete and
should IMHO.  Knights fight, Pelicans still perform service, why not
Laurels compete in A & S competition.  This gives us non-peers something
to emulate.

Well, Goddess and God forbid that I should ever have to judge an A & S
competition.  But if I were to do so, I would expect that an entry by
Mistress Laurel Seamchecker to be a higher standard than Joseph Newbie's
first or second entry if you understand me here.  This is what makes A &
S so difficult.  What standards do you set?  And do you set higher ones
for Laurels competing than you do for newcomers.  Maybe there should be
beginner, intermediate and advanced classes for competition?  But then
what if Mistress Laurel Seamchecker wants to try her hand at armoring? 
Do you judge her first attempt the same as you would her entry of an
Elizabethen dress?
