  I downloaded the latest Norton virus definitions and low and behold,
  there's a Macro virus found.

  The virus is WM.Cap.A. It's "common" in the wild.

  This Word Macro virus removes the macro and customize options under
  the tools menu. This means that you won't be able to see extra macros
  within Word documents.

  Btw, my version of Word (w/Office 97) warns me when opening the file
  that it has macros and to make sure it's from a trusted source before
  opening the macro. It then gives me the option to disable macros, open
  the macro or not to open the file.
