Well, ya know, BUYING the knighthood was the period way to 
do it, after all...

Which in later times led to bidding, buying, and bestowing 
military and even clergy appointments. A very capitalist 
country was England.

The bestowing of a knighthood on a worthy person by the 
King or Queen is a fairly modern notion.
