A lovely article on page 5A of today's Dallas Morning News, titled "In lab
tests, duct tape doesn't live up to its name." It's from the Knight-Ridder
wires, so may be in your local paper as well.

THe physicist who ran the tests of several substances (duct tape, "gooey
black tapes, clear acrylic ones, and foil-backed ones" in addition to a new
foam) used for repairing ductwork was quoted as saying: "What we dound was
that duct tape almost always failed. It failed reliably and often quite
catastrophically. And nothing else except duct tape failed."

Interesting!
