I would suggest that she look at the nomads of the Eurasian steppes.  In
many of these cultures, the women wore wore trousers and apparently were on
equal footing with the men.  The culture appears to have had little physical
change between the Sauromations of 5th and 6th Century B.C. and the Issyk of
the 12th Century.

About the 11th Century, a number of these nomadic people started moving west
in to Central Europe.  The flow increased in the 13th Century when the
Golden Horde started its westward expansion.  These people represent a
significant, but little studied facet of European history.
