instead of the tabard idea, why not *wide* war-armbands (perhaps 
and/or  helmet bands ????)  ... designed large enough that the black 
star is clearly visible ... suitable to mark friend/foe.

such a solution would satisfy both of the philosophical camps - the 
"personal/house/group livery" segment  (which i would support) and 
the kingdom "grande army" segment (which, as has been brought up as 
rather OP ...).  

would also allow support for the mercenray types who don't wear 
kingdom colors and are there under "pay-for-play" contract (grin) and 
simply want a way to not get gunched by the side that's paying their 
for their services.

it would also be significantly less expensive than full tabards and 
and could be done as a silk-screen process allowing simpler and 
faster mass production ...
