I will address just one of Keith's comments:

I disagree with you wholeheartedly.
There comes a time when splitting up a group is very healthy for the
SCA as a whole...here's just one example:

Once upon a time there was a Barony called Steppes(Dallas), it had
grown pretty large. Of course there were internal problems, all groups
have them. Some of the people from Ft.Worth decided that they wanted
to form a new group in Ft.Worth rather than being miserable and
eventually dropping out of the SCA. So they became a separate Shire.
The people of the new group became a cohesive unit, and they prospered.
They eventually grew in numbers and became a Barony for themselves.
Over time, some of those people in the Barony of Elfsea became restless,
and decided to form their own groups. Now there are the Canton of
Dragonsfire Tor and the Canton od Dun na la Ruadh(sp). Similar things
were going on in Steppes, smaller groups on the outskirts were
banding together to form new groups, and thus were born the Canton of
Lindenwood and the Canton of Glaslyn.

Some of these Cantons will eventually become Shires unto
themselves...and the DFW area WILL eventually hit critical mass and
become a Principality, and maybe even become its own Kingdom someday.

The moral of the story is this...

At times it is healthy to get out from under the parent group and
venture forth on one's own.

Cantons eventually become Shires.
Shires eventually become Baronies.
Regions eventually become Principalities.
and Principalities eventually become Kingdoms.

Its a natural progression...
It DOES help retain old members,
it DOES help recruit newcomers,
and it DOES help the SCA as a whole.
