I'm not sure why.  Do you have shorter line lengths
than 70?

*Smile* when you say that, boy!  UNIX mail and pine.
Not to get into a religious discussion,
which is to say a religious debate and then
a religious flame war, but there are advantages at times
of having What I See Is What 
You'll Get, particularly when posting source code
and poetry, and ASCII art.
I don't know whether RFCs cover the topic of line
lengths.

Oh, and I think popclient (a mail transfer client)
also chokes on long lines.

(At least the Linux implementations of popclient.)
