The main thing you want to do is try to set up ideal conditions; pay
close attention to proper breath support, proper posture, a relaxed
throat, more attention to breath support.... drink some luke warm (not
too cold, not too hot--let's not send the throat into shock) water
before-hand, and don't strain anything. It is difficult to pay
attention to so many things at once, 'am I breathing right? am I
standing up straight? am I *still* breathing right?' However, during
your warm up you will most likely be spouting non-sense syllables, so
you may concentrate on the technique and not the words.
Breathing properly is extremely important, it can save your voice. You
might want to run through a little breathing excercise. I like to take
a deep breath, hold for 8 counts, and then exhale slowly (either hiss or
pretend to blow through a straw) and try to continue the exhale for as
many counts as possible. Repeat five times. Then I take a very fast,
very deep breath (a catch-breath), hold it for a second or two, and then
exhale forcefully on a "Ha" until I run out of air. Yes, your abdominal
muscles should bounce.
Choose whatever type of warm-up you want. Sing a little song, or recite
a toungue twister. I recommend that you cover all the bases; go over
all the vowel sounds (make them clear) as well as all the consonants
(crisp). Whatever you do, don't strain the vocal muscles. If your
throat feels sore after heralding (or singing) then you may have
improper technique. Take 64 ounces of water and see a voice instructor
in the morning--;-)--just joking.
