That's pretty close to what I was taught--areligious, not 
*irreligious*.  Large difference, not so obvious in some people's
minds.

Likewise, there is a difference between speaking *about*
religion--"There was a Catholic church in the Middle Ages, from
which sprang up numerous schisms and heresies"--vs.
practicing religion--i.e., preaching a sermon.  Trying to forbid
someone from mentioning that there were religions in period
is violating their civil rights of free speech, and violates the 
highest level of law, at least in the U.S., the Constitution.

Good point, and clarified what I was trying to say, but I think the 
point was, we don't all engage in the same type of celebration.
Happily, many holidays have happily blended together in their 
meaning of origin and later meanings for which they would've
been co-opted.
