For getting rid of labels, try using a cleaning solution called "Goo 
Gone."  I know the name is ridiculous, but it works great.  I've used 
it to remove road tar, bug splat and old tape adhesive that nothing else 
would touch.  It's based on citric acid so it's a lot safer than most 
commercial cleaners and it cleans off relatively easily.
