Another related question:  Is it only men doing these things for 
ladies that makes these actions chivalrous?  I don't think any of 
these questions are always true.  They depend on circumstances.  I 
don't expect a man who has his arms full carrying things to also open 
the door for me if I'm empty-handed.  I feel polite behavior like 
these goes both ways and ladies should offer to help carry things and 
open doors

You don't have to always say nice things to be polite, "Silence is
golden".  There is a difference when you're talking to your closest
friends in private and talking about someone to acquaintances or anyone
who'll listen.
