I had the impression that knighthoods were given to non-fighters
before the end of the Middle Ages (however defined).  There
was some sort of tension between "nobility of the sword"
versus "nobility of the robe" in pre-Revolutionary France
(sorry I don't recall the French terms), but I don't know
that is was non-acceptance.

I do agree that the topic is generally likely to cause great fuss.
