Greetings from Sir Alexis:

The peerage for recognition of chivalric prowess is the Order of the
Chivalry, comprising both Knights and Masters at Arms. The distinction
lies in the oath of fealty sworn by the knights to the crown (symbolized
by the chain). Masters at Arms are not required to swear fealty, though
many choose to do so. The original distinction arose from individuals
who for personal or religious reasons could not swear an oath, but since
then a lot of history has given the choice as Knight or Master at Arms
different meanings in different kingdoms.
