Wolf stated, in part:
"if memory serves, i was reading a analysis of the final conquests
leading up to the fall of Baghdad by the mongols ... europe and the
middle east had moderate refuge inside their city walls util the mongols
chinese conquests added the worlds finest siege engineers to the ranks
of the armies."

The 'combined arms' approach to warfare has successful antecedents in
various regions..such as the porta-castles the Normans (...grrrrr) used
in the 1066 campaign against Harold Godwinson and the rest of the
English. They weren't actually used in the Battle of Hastings, but used
to put together a strong place of defense once ashore in the south of
England while Harold was off north defeating Harold Hardrada et. al, at
the Battle of Stamford Bridge (booo..), and travelling back south.
Also, in a much earlier time span, the Assyrians were known to have
used such special forces as 'marine' type units (using inflated bladders
to navigate watery-swampy areas as I recall from long-past research..and
also the military engineering type units. They had phenomenal success,
and their army even outlived their empire by a couple of years.
