I had a similar experience when I wielded the sword; I fought better
than any other battle of the war, it did seem to move of its own accord.
But I don't believe that the spirit of Ricardo was in the sword.
Ricardo's spirit was in _me_.

Then the first possibility would certainly apply. Riccardo's final act as a
Knight, Lion, and Hero, before departing to Heaven.
