Pug began his post with the following statements:

Laird Erc fitzMungo and others have made comments on the RapierNet
mailing list regarding this event. I think I need to make some polite
observations and possible corrections. I am sure that the way some
things were stated was not the way they were meant to be taken. Laird
Erc's post was forwarded on to another list, where others have been
offended by the message as it was stated, and hopefully not how it
was meant. Unfortunately Laird Erc was not even a member of one of
these lists and unable to defend himself appropriately from his possibly
misunderstood posting.

I would like to also state that I think that Erc didn't mean to
offend or to imply that people of an earlier time period detracted from
events. I'm sure that Erc was just trying to say that having (virtually)
everyone dressed in the same time period lends a greater air of
authenticity and atmosphere to an event. I can understand this as
Jehanne and I were fortunate enough to attend an event in England that
was put on by a 15th century group. The fact that everyone was dressed
in the same time period just made the event feel more real. Having said
that, I love the diversity of SCA events, and would never want to imply
that we should change the society and try to force everyone into a
narrow scope of time and culture.

While I don't think that Erc was trying to imply anything
negative about earlier period personas, I do understand why some folks
may have been somewhat offended by what he wrote. I think that the only
that Erc may be guilty of is not wording things quite as delicately as
was perhaps necessary. Its very easy to mis-communicate with the written
word as the reader is not in front of the writer and therefore can not
see the body language and hear the tonal inflections that are so much a
part of spoken communication.

	Such are my two pence,
