ANST - origin of awards

Greetings the list!

Could someone discuss the basis for our award system in the society.  We
were debating this the other night.  What is the history of the title of
Pelican and the awards of Comet, Thistle, etc.  

Basicly, are these all society titles or are there any historical
references to them as there are King, Count, etc.
