ANST - Apologies

If anyone on this list was offended at my words to Gunnora, I am sorry. I
did not mean to insult her; I simply found her manner inappropriate for a
teacher. When I first did such things, I was instructed that if you have
to address a person directly, you do it privately. If you are discussing a
particular element that could be used for th edification of the general
populace, then you use that item as a springboard BUT you write/speak in
such a way that you are not attacking the person(s) involved.

For example, if you are offended that someone uses the term "smalls"
(meaning in period = underwear) for "children", instead of the perfectly,
documentably period word "children," you can point out that it is a sad
habit among SCA folk who joined in a certain period to misuse that word
thinking they are speaking in a more medieval manner, when those who know
period etymology are either amused or offended, and that unfortunately the
misbelievers have passed their misuse on to new people, who need to learn
better.

I have a long list of cooking-related terms that Must Go also, such as
"feastocrat" and "remove" (which is from the Victorian era, for pity's
sake!) but I think you get the idea. Do I slam the person who uses
"smalls" or another inappropriate word? No, I point out that this is a
common failing and that the person was merely misinformed. The same thing
for people who serve iced tea at supper, or the nasty powdered fake
lemonade (limonadas is cheaper, easier, and tastier!).

Apparently Gunnora did not take it that way, and a couple others told me I
was rude for telling her so. I am sorry, I did not mean to sound that way,
but I am fairly blunt-spoken and didn't think I needed to cover my speech
in my new Kingdom. I'll mind my tongue from now on, especially here.
