Alex,
It is great that your Shire has made you feel so welcome and you want to
express that with nominating them for awards.  This means they are doing
their jobs.  For I feel it is the responsibility for seasoned members to
welcome and bring along any new players.  You will probably find out they
have already received the awards you would want to put them in for.  But,
you can always check that out with your local herald and then make a
responsible decision.  You can also find out from your local herald  what
the awards are and some simple qualifications.  
Last, sometimes word fame like what you wrote in you message is far better
than an award.  Especially if they have the awards you want to put them in
for, it tells them you appreciate them and all they do.
