Actually,  the shinai was invented because the bokken broke too many bones.
When students were first taught the martial arts of the samurai,  the use of 
the katana was a big part of it.  But a lot of the students were being 
accidentally killed by the sharp swords.  So the bokken was invented to 
replace the katana.  The shape and weight were the same.  And they handled 
the same.  But the bokkens also had a problem.  They were made of hard wood 
that broke bones and heads.  Instead of being killed,  students were being 
maimed.  So the shinai was invented to replace the bokken.  The shinai 
handles the same as the katana without killing or maiming..
