There is a story, which explains why there is amber on the shores of the
Baltic Sea.

A long time ago, the goddess of the Baltic, Jurate, noticed that someone
was fishing the Baltic, and she went to investigate. She met Kastytis, a son
of Earth (human) and fell in love with him. Wanting to be with him, she
took him down to her underwater palace, which was made of amber.

The Thunder god, Perkunas, seeing that Jurate would polute herself with
a son of Earth, threw down a thunderbolt and killed Kastytis, along with
the amber palace. The remains of the palace washed onto the shore. Forever
more, Jurate would weep amber tears for her lost love.

There is a reason why Perkunas killed Kastytis, which goes back to how
Lithuanians revered fire. Fire was personified as the goddess Gabija,
and to bank her for the night you have to use pure water, no dirt could be
in it, since it was believed that this would hurt her eyes. And an angry
fire goddess is not a good thing. The story explains why there is amber
on the shores of the Baltic Sea, and why it is necessary to keep water
pure.
