there was the great and little known "polish land scam" when enterprising 
mongol real-estate agents sold vacation estates in eastern poland before the 
scouting expedition came through ... and then resold it afterwards.  same 
agents were reported to have done same in baghdad and surrounding environs  ... 
(grin)  
actually the biggest medieval "get rich quick scheme" was based out of Rome ...
