Salut Cozyns,

Lyonel aisai.

Well, it's time once again for Grampa Lyonel's Annual War Nag
(pat.pend.). Every year I find at least one or two poor b*st*rds who
failed to heed my fine counsel--probably rolled their eyes and deleted
the letter--and just *look* what happened to them. No, better not--some
things are just too unpleasant to revisit.

So let's get down to it:

*Armor - if it's broken, repair it *now*. If you wait until the last
minute, you're liable to forget and pack it.

Go over all your rivets, straps, and buckles. If any of the rivets are
loose or cutting through leather or metal, patch, repair, and replace.
Twist and tug every leather strap to make sure none of them have rotted
through. Check the buckles for cracked and broken parts. Replace
anything questionable.

*Weapons - are your weapons solid, thoroughly taped (including the
edges--yes, it *is* required), and at least 1.25 inches contrasting
across from hilt to tip? Are your thrusting tips the correct thickness
and diameter? If you're using low profile thrusting tips that are over
two weeks old, you should probably replace them. Also verify the
integrity of your basket hilts. If your weapon requires a lanyard, does
it have one?

Is your shield edging adequate? If it's breaking through at the corners,
replace or reinforce it. Is your handle secure? Is your hand
protection whole, intact, and securely fastened?

*Hygiene - clip your fingernails and toenails. You'll be in boots and
gloves all day long. If your nails are even a little bit on the long
side, your fingers and toes will ache by the end of the first day. By
the end of the second day, you'll have nails growing in.

Male fighters who do not sport a beard will want to get a close shave
each morning before fighting. (Two-days' growth stubble + chin strap =
nasty rash.)

Go to the war. Execute Trimarans (but in a nice way). Have fun.

See you there.

lo vostre por vos servir
Sir Lyonel Oliver Grace
