referring back to my mundane profession (why re-invent the wheel), the 
ballroom competitions have several levels of competition and one can compete 
at a higher level than their current level of study, just not lower.  maybe a 
stratification to the A&S competitions might be in order.  say a beginner(no 
one above a thistle?), intermediate (iris and below?) and open categories. 
this would give those wanting to "get their feet wet" a less intimidating 
arena as well as providing the opportunity for a more experienced artisan to 
see how they stack up against the laurels in their field.
