Alas Welcome to November! November was styled by the Saxons Wint-monat
or wind month, for the gales of wind prevalent at this season of the
year. It also bore the name Blot-monath or blood month for the
circumstance of being the time of slaughter of cattle and swine to be
salted for the winter months.

Next was November; he was full gross and fat
As fed with lard, and that right well might seem;
For he had been fatting hogs of late,
That yet his brows with sweat did reek and steam
And yet the season was full sharp and bream;
In planting eeke he took no small delight:
Whereon he rode, not easy was to deem;
For it a dreadful Centaure was in sight,
The seed of Saturne and fair Nais, Chiron height.
           Spenser
