I recently ran into two very intresting web sites. the 
first is http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html 
This is the American Memory, Historical Collection for 
the National Digital Library. Part of the Library of 
Congress.  They even have some period items (maps and 
manuscripts)

The other is www.octavo.com  they use specialy built 
high resolution cameras to photograph manuscripts, and 
then make them available on CDROM. (talk about Xmas 
gifts). Prices range from $25 to $75 depending on the 
manuscript. Volumes inclued: Nicolaus Copernicus, 
De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium, Libri VI; Galileo 
Galilei, Sidereus Nuncius;Hans Holbein, Icones 
Historiarum Veteris Testamenti and many more.
