The NRA, like all other organizations employing lobbyists,
is not tax-exempt.  The SCA is tax-exempt, and therefore 
would risk (and probably lose) its tax-exempt status if
it endulged in political activities.

It's not the non-profit aspect, but the tax-exempt
status, that stops the SCA as an organization from
taking part in political activities.  Of course, the
individuals who just happen to be SCA members _do_
pay taxes, and are quite free (and in my opinion would
be well-advised) to take part in political activism.
