Peder, the way you keep asking this makes me think you want someone to jump
up and say, "in that case, it's fine for you to wear a white belt even if you
are not a knight!"

But that's not the case in the SCA.  Our social structure doesn't even begin
to come close to medieval structure, nor do our rank/title/award systems approximate
real ones.  We know this.  Many people have proposed changes.  But the status
quo and the weight of history argue persuasively that these things will never
change in the SCA.

Within the SCA, the white belt is reserved as part of the regalia of Knights
of the Society for Creative Anachronism.  Period.  It doesn't matter if every
person in the whole middle ages wore white belts/swordbelts -- here it's reserved
for KSCAs.

If you're interested in writing up an article on the topic, or trying to push
for legislative change for the whole SCA on the topic of not reserving belt
colors, those are up to you.  But at this point, if you show up in a white belt
and are not a knight, chances are that you'll be asked to remove it.
