That doesn't say anything about the peers in question wanting the awards. Rather,
it is an accurate reflection of the fact that peerage isn't just an award --
it is a job, and the populace wants us to be active and do our jobs as peers.

Not always. There are approximately as many reasons for becoming an apprentice
as their are apprentices. Most of my apprentices never want to be Laurels --
they wanted someone to help motivate them to get off their butts and do art.
Some apprentices want a household and a feudal structure to belong to. Some
want to learn a single art or skill.

Some Laurels will only take an apprentice who they feel can become a peer.
I don't do it that way, although I hope to teach peerage skills to any of my
apprentices whether or not they ever advance in the Society.

I've never been a protege or worked closely with one, so I don't know if they
see it as a formal announcement of "I want a Pelican" or not. I do know that
often times to become a knight it is expected that you will make a committment
to it, often by becoming a squire and usually with the avowed goal of knighthood.

But as for the Laurel, the only thing being an apprentice does for a candidate
when we discuss them in the Circle is it tells us who should control the discussion
of that candidate. Having a Laurel also means that the apprentice has an advocate
in the Circle, but non-apprentices can and do get vehement advocacy as well.

If you look at the majority of the Laurels, you will find that most of us were
not apprentices. More of the newer Laurels will have been apprentices, but
I assure you that even now we're discussing candidates who are not and never
plan to be apprentices.
