I think Galen covered it very well.

The only thing I would add is that traditionally, the Knights are the 
"King's men, who openly rode forward into battle in his name"  or so the 
ceremony sometimes says :)

Perhaps that is why the Chivalry was originally asked to speak for each 
unbelted fighter who enters.

I personally like the tradtion :)
